Diwali
Diwali is a festival of light. It is celebrated because it was when good come over evil, light over darkness and knowledge of ignorance . Diwali comes from the word dipavali which means 'row of lights'. Indians celebrate Diwali for 5 days, but in Australia and western country it is usually celebrated for only one night. which is the night of the new moon that marks the end of the Hindu month of Ashwin and the start of the month of Kartik. In the western calender it is usually around October or November. It also marks the end of the harvest and the Indian new year.
Indians will usually buy new clothes, Diwali cards, pay all there bills. A important part of Diwali is welcoming Lakshmi into there homes. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth and good luck. Hindus want her to bless her home, there houses should be clean because it is believed that Lakshmi will not reward the lazy. Diyas (little oil lamps) are placed on window or door ways to attract her to there house. some family's will create rangoli patterns on there door step. they are usually made out of flour, rice and brightly colored spices. now a day people use colored chalk. This is what Diwali is like for a boy born into the Brahmans class. Dear diary today is Diwali. I am born into the Brahmans class. I helped my mum make the bright rangoli pattern on the door step, the chalk felt all dry and crumbly in my fingers. I also helped mum make the food to offer to the goddess Lakshmi, it smelt sweet and tasted sweeter. tonight we had our whole family over my mum was cooking and the men were watching TV. We put loutes candles to welcome Lakshmi, they smelt very nice. At midnight there were loud, colorful fire works. |
